Nail polish poison
Most women enjoy painting their nails. The feeling I get from a fresh mani, pedi lasts all week. Then it’s time to repeat. I was horrified when I heard about the dangerous chemicals in some nail polish. Chemicals that can have serious negative effects on our overall health.
According to new studies, popular nail polish brands contains numerous harmful chemicals and toxins that can cause hormonal imbalance and other health problems. The study focused on more than 20 women who color their nails regularly with some of the most popular nail polish brands. The results showed that all of the brands tested positive for triphenyl phosphate. What’s even worse is these chemicals are active as long as 10 hours after application.
Another study that tested 10 popular nail polish brands found that 8 of them also contain this compound, while 2 of these 8 products didn’t list the compound on their label. This is concerning as triphenyl phosphate is very harmful to the endocrine system.
What is triphenyl phosphate?
Triphenyl Phosphate is a chemical compound that can disrupt our endocrine system and hormones and affect our metabolism and reproductive system as well. The compound is especially harmful when we color our nails regularly. This allows accumulation of triphenyl phosphate in our system, which will slowly destroy our bodies from the inside. Scary stuff!!
Triphenyl Phosphate is considered a powerful neurotoxin and allergen that can have serious consequences on your health, but nail polishes contain even more dangerous compounds.
Just to name a few:
Toluene is a chemical that has been known to prevent proper child development and may cause skin irritation as well.
Formaldehyde is a well known carcinogen that can dissolve in water and air. Exposure to it can cause symptoms such as asthma, inflammation and shortness of breath, and is especially dangerous to people suffering from chronic disorders.
Here are some natural alternatives to nail polish:
Acquarella is completely natural and offers more than 50 different nail colors. It’s water-based and contains no formaldehyde, toluene or triphenyl phosphate. I have seen a real difference after using Acquarella Conditioner
- Honeybee gardens
This natural polish is also water-based and doesn’t have even the slightest trace of the aforementioned chemicals. I found some very pretty colors and especially like Honeybee Gardens WaterColors Nail Enamel Valentine
- Peacekeeper Cause-Metics
This polish brand contains argan oil based enamels and is completely free of toxins. It is also a great choice to keep your nails hydrated.
This is a vegan nail polish brand free of any toxins. I love that I can get a quality product that offers base coat-top coat in one. SPARITUAL Nail Multitasker Base Topcoat
Colored nails look very nice but some commercial brands expose us to a risk that’s not worth taking. If you must color your nails try a natural polish that won’t harm your nails and health.
I can’t lie it has been a struggle to find anything close to the fabulous color I get from using O.P.I. but I think it is way worth it to find a healthy alternative. If enough attention is brought to this issue we can likely get the major polish manufacturers to produce non-toxic alternatives to the polish we have grown to love. Stay safe, stay healthy. xoxo
